I Need Your Help
As a self-published author, I do not have a large publishing house behind me to do the heavy lifting when it comes to marketing my new book. I’ve chosen the self-publishing route in order to have the freedom to publish what I want, when I want, and where I want. The disadvantage to this kind of publishing is the difficulty in reaching a wide audience. This is where I need the help of my friends and family more than ever. If you are reading this newsletter I count you among that special group of people. For anyone who has the time and interest in helping, here are some helpful ways you can help Crash Planet reach a larger audience.
POST ABOUT IT - Buy a paperback and when it comes in the mail post about it on social media. Say something like, “I just received a new book in the mail, written by my friend, Scott Cahan. I can’t wait to read it.” If you buy an ebook rather than a paperback, then hold up your phone or I-Pad with the book cover showing on the screen
FIND MY SUPERFANS - If my new book does not look like your kind of book, no problem. Think of someone you know who enjoys stories like Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, and Narnia. If someone has popped into your mind then you probably know someone who would enjoy Crash Planet. Send them a link to my book on Amazon with a note about how you think they would enjoy this book. It also doesn’t hurt to tell them you know me personally, or you follow me on Substack, or whatever.
CONTACT AN INFLUENCER - Send a copy of Crash Planet to that person you know who has a large social media following. The influencer you choose would have to post about something that relates in some way to my book. If nothing else, they could display it prominently in the background while they do their thing in the foreground. They’ll figure it out.
POST A REVIEW - If you decide to buy and read my book, then please don’t forget to post a review on Amazon or wherever you bought it from. Reviews can help other potential readers decide if they want to read it. If my book gets enough reviews Amazon’s algorithm will kick in and help me with free promotions. Reviews do not have to be long. Short reviews are just as effective as long detailed ones.
GOODREADS - Mention Crash Planet on Goodreads. List it as a book you want to read. Then, when you’ve finished reading it be sure to leave a review on Goodreads.
TELL A FRIEND - Nothing is more powerful in book marketing than one reader telling a friend, face-to-face, how much they enjoyed the book they just finished. If person-to-person is your preferred method then I’m behind you 100%. More superfans are created with this method than any other.
FINDING THE RIGHT READERS - My goal is to get my books to the people who will truly enjoy reading them. Those people are out there, somewhere. I just have to get my books into their hands. These are the people who will read my books, enjoy them, and then tell others how much they enjoyed them. That’s the definition of a superfan. I’m asking you, my friends and family, to help me get Crash Planet into the hands of its superfans.
Audiobook Recommendation
I recently listened to the audiobook version of Lennon, Dylan, Alice, and Jesus; the Spiritual Biography of Rock and Roll, written by Greg Laurie. This book was so much fun to read. Anyone who knows me knows I grew up listening to all the great rock music of the seventies and eighties. I still listen to much of it today. I learned a long time ago that it’s possible to love the music without idolizing the singers and bands who created the music. So, I definitely do not hold these people up as Gods as much of the world does. That being said, I still respect them for creating some of the best music ever made. Author, Greg Laurie admits to having a similar reverence toward the rock and roll legends of his youth.
In this book, Greg lovingly tells the story of a large number of famous men and women who sang and performed much of the classic rock that old-timers like me are still listening to today. What sets this book apart from other biographical books about rock and roll is that this one focuses on the spiritual journey of all of these famous names. The three legends mentioned in the title receive the most attention, but many others are featured as well. Everyone from Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash to Janis Joplin and Donna Summer. Each story describes how God worked in the life of each individual to call them toward faith in Jesus Christ. The author does not try to say they all ended up becoming born-again Christians. To be sure, some of those mentioned clearly professed faith in Jesus at some point or another. Most however were searching and had significant encounters with the Christian faith at some point in their life. Many of the stories told are of rock stars who didn’t begin to search for the truth about God until their career had taken its toll on them and left them trying to pick up the pieces of their life. When they were at rock bottom, they looked up and found God.
I found all of this fascinating. These stories left me with a strong sense of the way God never gives up on people. It doesn’t matter how decadent a person’s lifestyle was or how much they seemed to be serving satan rather than God. God’s grace is available to everyone and anyone who seeks him. I highly recommend Lennon, Dylan, Alice, and Jesus to anyone who loves classic rock. Even if classic rock is not your favorite music, you can still find much to love in this book about the faith journeys of some really famous names.
